Fabrication and characterization of MEMS thermal actuators:
Thermal actuators, as their name suggest, take advantage of constrained thermal expansion to achive linear motion in the unconstrained direction of the device. By applying current to the device, joule heating causes thermal expansion that results in linear actuation.
In this project, the thermal actuators have been facbricated for use in an optical cavity device consisting of a micro mirror chip and a thermal actuator that is capable of linearly displacing fiber optic cable.
