The Great Annual Ducati Teardown

I guess I can never leave anything alone. Every year, about November or so, I get this compulsion to tear down the 900SS and check everything out. Here's a picture of my bench with some heads, cylinders, piston, etc. laying around. Pretty cool, huh!

Check out this cylinder...hone marks still there at 25K miles. Yeah, they're pretty hard to see, but they ARE there. And you can just make out my Snap-On metric tap-and-die set (a birthday gift from my wife Annie...we courted on my '73 RD350, so she knew what she was getting into).

The only bummer so far is that I broke (ouch) an oil ring putting the piston back in the jug. And I even have a ring compressor (which I wasn't using, of course)...those cast oil rings are nice, but they're kind of a bear, the compression rings are no problem.
Here's a picture of the rest of the bike. Left the back wheel on to help balance the bike on those old jacks. Needless to say, I try to keep the kids from playing in shop while the thing is perched like that!
Here's where it all happens...those fragile Ducati cases. I've heard the bottom end is only good for about 50K miles. With lots of TLC I'll try to disprove that myth. UPDATE! Sigh, the myth is true...my left main bearing came apart at 40K miles. I did a complete engine overhaul, and in the process fitted some Ferracci 11:1 pistons. She's back together and runs stronger than ever! I've got many pictures of the rebuild; I'll post them sometime...
Finally, I couldn't do it without all the wonderful tools my father left me... Thanks, DAD! Wish you were here!
